What is sallet helm?

The sallet helmet is a type of medieval helmet that was popular in Europe during the 15th and early 16th centuries. It was typically worn by soldiers and knights and offered better protection than other helmets of its time, such as the bascinet.

The sallet helmet has a distinctive shape, with a pointed back and a visor that covers the face. It often has a crest on the top and sometimes features decorative elements such as embossed and etched designs. Despite the improved protection it offered, the sallet helmet was relatively lightweight and allowed for good visibility and range of motion.

The sallet helmet was often worn with additional armor pieces, such as a bevor (a chin guard) and a gorget (a neck guard). It was gradually replaced by other helmet styles in the 16th century, but it remained popular in some regions and was even used by some soldiers during the English Civil War in the 17th century.

Today, sallet helmets are prized by collectors and historical reenactors for their unique design and historical significance.
